Well with the batch being unlucky #13, you would think I would have put some planning into this one… but no. I had 2 recipes that I was interested in, and I thought I had seen everything I needed on line, but when I can to do an order I could find nothing! Plan B was to use up some hops I had here, following the hop additions of one of the recipes. I go to the local supply shop and they had an amazing array of stock in… I am going to have to stop discounting them as a supply option… but no liquid yeast so I stuck to the plan to use things up.
Notes
I started with a pot on the inside stove – the malt in 2.5 ltrs of water – which I steeped around 65deg C for 30. Whilst this was going on I set up the burner outside and filled the pot with 20ltrs of water from the hot tap and cranked the heat.
After 30min steeping, I removed the grain bag and pored the liquid into the boil pot, which was just about at the boil point. I added in the Extract as it heated up.
5/7 It has taken an age to bubble and I am not sure – not enough air into the wort I think was the problem – it is sitting at 22deg C in the cupboard with a blanket wrapped around it – the steadiest the temp has ever been.
14/7 Bottling! wow it tasted great. Lots of sediment though. Cannot wait until it is conditioned… sure will sneak one before 2 weeks are up.
Tasting Notes
29/7 We had a bottle before the 2 weeks were up and it was lacking in hop flavour so I was worried. But today after 2 weeks the hops are stronger than I remembered tasting last week. That is good, although the balance with the malt is off, and it is almost a little grassy. I look forward to comparing it with the next back, and then what will hopefully be my first all grain brew after that.
